Umno Youth chief Hishammuddin Hussein announced last night that the movement will take legal action against an opposition party if it accused Umno Youth of masterminding the Sept 8 riot in Batu Buruk, Terengganu.
He said the movement would sue the party as its ceramah speakers came to states like Kedah and accused Umno Youth of orchestrating the riot.
However, the Umno leader did not name the opposition party.
“I strongly deny Umno Youth was involved as coincidently on that day many Terengganu Umno leaders were with me in Kuala Terengganu,” Hishammuddin told reporters after breaking fast with Kedah Umno Youth leaders in Alor Star.
He said the party had to accuse Umno Youth to get away from the ugly incident as the people did not accept their “mistake and arrogance”..
According to Bernama, Hishammuddin said Umno Youth has a big agenda to prove to the world Islam’s noble image of seeking progress and will never resort to the opposition’s “rough and tough” ways.
The riot erupted when a group of men attacked policemen who ordered the crowd to disperse peacefully from attending an illegal assembly at Jalan Sultan Mahmud, near Batu Buruk, in Kuala Terengganu.
First time bullets fired
The crowd retaliated, torching the Jalur Gemilang, damaging public properties and seven people were injured, including four policemen.
The oppositon claimed that the police used unprecedented violence to disperse the crowd where speakers from Bersih – a coalition of political parties and NGOs to campaign for electoral reform – were to speak.
Pantai Batu Buruk will be remembered as the first time the police used live bullets against a group of protestors, resulting in two individuals being shot.
According to the police, the firearm was discharged in self-defence against a group of angry rioters. There, too, was the confusion over the number of bullets fired – initially one, then two, and now four
